Taking a Few Days Off for a Little Repair Work

Well, not "off" exactly ... I'm hopping over to Honolulu this afternoon and have a date early tomorrow morning with a bright young orthopedic surgeon who is going to give me a brand new knee. I am taking my laptop along and will try to knock out a post or two while I'm in Honolulu. Otherwise, I'll resume things here in about a week. Y'all come back, now ... Hear?

Mitt Romney: Mostly Right, Except for Exceptions

Same-sex marriage is the hot-button issue that has all the conservatives in a tizzy. Of course, Mitt Romney has been asked where he stands on the idea along the campaign trail.

Marriage, says Mitt very emphatically, has been one man and one woman for three thousand years!

Uh ... well, with the exception of your great-grandfather, Mitt. He had twelve wives.

A Kiwi Shows Some Insight into U.S. Politics

I was recently on a rail journey and, as always, it’s interesting and entertaining to meet new people over meals in the Amtrak dining cars. One such encounter was aboard the California Zephyr with a just-retired New Zealander who was touring the U.S. by rail.

Over lunch, as we were crossing the Sierra Nevadas and gazing down at Donner Lake, he suddenly said he had a political joke for me. These were his exact words:

"A liberal, a moderate and a conservative walk into a bar.
And the bartender says, 'Hi, Mitt!' "

Well, there you go: The Kiwis have Romney figured out. I suspect that eventually most Americans will, too.

Fox News: The ‘No Shame’ Network.

Back in the mid-90s, during a spike in gasoline prices, commentators on Fox News rose as one to defend then-president George W. Bush. You can’t blame Dubya, they said, because the president has no control over the price of gas.

Today there is another spike in the price of gasoline, but this time around, according to the Fox News “analysts”, it is President Obama’s fault and they are attacking him for not controlling the price of gas.

Of course, the Fox audience has no problem with that. As a friend of mine recently said, “They go there for ammunition, not for information.”

Maybe so. But it doesn’t change the fact that Fox News is a fraud. And a disgrace.
