The New York Times has an interesting story today about Ken Mehlman, who
was one of the key political strategists for George W. Bush’s re-election
campaign in 2004.
That was the year the Republicans got the issue of gay marriage on the
ballot in a lot of the swing states in order to turn out their base … the
theory being the would vote against gay marriage and for “Dubya”. It worked, too.
And now we learn that Mehlman is gay, has come out of the closet, and is
urging the Republican Party to accept gay marriage. That story prompted some
wonderful comments in the Times, but of those I read, this was the best:
Yet another conservative taking the liberal position on the
one issue that hits close to home.
McCain, on torture. Rubio, on immigration.
Cheney, and this guy, on gay marriage. Ryan, on his family government contract
business issues. Jindal, on hurricane relief.
And so it goes.
