Who Lies and Who Speaks the Truth? The Results Are In.

I do not for a minute excuse the Democrats for not being truthful when speaking to the media and to their constituents, but anyone who has any idea of what's really going on in our country knew that this would be the way an objective analysis would turn out. If you haven't bookmarked Politifact, do so. It will astound you.

How Do We Know Who Won the VP Debate?

Democrats are up beat and excited. Republicans are complaining that Joltin' Joe Biden was rude to poor ol' Paul Ryan. Awwww! But that pretty much answers the question, doesn't it!

Two-Thirds of Republicans Are (Willfully?) Misinformed.

According to a recent poll developed by a government professor at Dartmouth and conducted by YouGov, 63 percent of Republicans believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction prior to the start of the Iraq War. Of course, it is now accepted as absolute fact that that was not the case. The only argument left is whether or not Bush and Cheney knew that before the war began.

And, as the TV pitchman says, “But wait! There’s more!”

As if that’s not discouraging enough, the poll also reports that 64 percent of Republicans actually think Barack Obama was not born in this country.

How can you expect to hold serious, rational conversations with people like that?

Being Fair Doesn't Always Mean Equal Treatment.

Please! Do not try to tell me that both sides are equally at fault … that the left is just as offensive and vitriolic as the right … or that you wish “a pox on both their houses”.

In what very large and very lazy segments of the media fob off as “balanced reporting”, they would have us believe that liberals are just as mean-spirited, just as angry and just as violent as the far right. Or that Democrats are just as responsible for the gridlock in Washington as the Republicans. Sorry ... there is plenty of fault on both sides, but the tilt is way over to the right.

Sure there are people who can be described as “left-wing extremists” and they should be condemned whenever they go to their extremes. But, while they may squirt fake blood on mink coats or burn down extravagant homes under construction, with very rare exceptions they don’t threaten to kill people ... or actually kill people.

But extremists on the right? They’re something else altogether. That’s where the racists are. That’s where the gun nuts live. They are the people who label as “slut” someone asking for equal treatment under the law. Or block serious legislation just because they don't want Barack Obama to look good. Or shoot doctors providing legal abortions. Or blow up federal buildings.

So, by all means, let the media report all the bad stuff that happens. Just don’t say that both left and right are equally to blame. Because it just ain’t so.

What a Bunch of Freakin' LOSERS!!

“On the campaign trail, Ron Paul said he does not like his milk homogenized. After this, Rick Perry said, ‘I am also not a fan of gay milk.’”
–Conan O’Brien

“In Sioux City, Iowa, there was another debate between the seven Republicans running for president. All your favorites were there: Grumpy, Dopey, the other Dopey, Romney, Bashful, another Dopey, and Happy.”
–Jimmy Kimmel

Best description yet of the collection of bozos chasing the Republican nomination: A clown car!

(Thanks to Honolulu Notes for these!)

The Big Republican Advantage: Dumb Democrats

A recent survey shows President Obama’s popularity is declining. Well, sure, you say, it’s those damn Republicans. If Obama says the sky is up, they’ll stand on their heads and shriek that it’s down.

Nope … the main reason Obama’s job rating is slipping is because of the liberals who are mad that he’s been compromising with the Republicans … which, of course, is exactly what he said he would do during the 2008 campaign. I certainly understand that. It’s very frustrating because it sure doesn’t seem as though the Republicans in Congress – at least the loony half of them – have been willing to meet the president even a quarter of the way.

But this is the Republicans big advantage: They stick with their candidates right down the line no matter how ignorant or incompetent or just plain loony they might be. Never mind that. He or she’s a Republican … vote for ‘em anyway.

But we Democrats? We managed to elect a president who’s inspiring, thoughtful and smart, and is doing his best to deal with the monumental problems facing the country despite being vilified and frustrated at every turn by the Republicans. And the first time he takes a position we don’t like, we’re ready to throw him under the bus.

And that is really, really, really dumb!

Around and around and around we go ...

Well, the Democrats tried again ... looking for a compromise that would make a bill to provide $40 million for science research acceptable to Republicans.

Once again Republicans tacked on the ridiculous pornography amendment (see previous post). And once again enough Democrats caved to kill the measure.

What is it with the Democrats, anyway? These guys just don't get it. There is no point looking for bipartisanship. When it comes to anything the Obama Administration proposes, the Republicans in Congress WILL ... NOT ... COOPERATE.

Hey ... isn't this the same bunch who campaigned in 2008 on the theme "Country First"?

Theirs Lots of Suport for There Govuner

Rick Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, is a real gem.

He trashed Obama’s stimulus program and refused to take millions of federal dollars from the program. (Don't need no Obama dollars in Texas.)

He opposed Obama’s efforts to reform health care on the grounds that Texans can do it better. (He’s done a helluva job so far: more than 25% of people in Texas have no health insurance, leading the nation in that dubious category.)

And Perry is so incensed at the big bad federal government, he has actually talked about the possibility of Texas seceding from the Union.

Take a good look at the photograph I found on a wonderful blog originating in Alaska called The Mudflats. It was taken at a Perry re-election rally. You just can't buy great advertising like that!

The Fine Art of Having It Both Ways

There is no doubt that the recent attempt to blow up a jetliner over Detroit is a scary reminder that the terrorists are still out there. And – if we are to be honest about this – we must surely admit that no screening system is ever going to be foolproof.

Remember Richard Reid, aka the shoe bomber? He tried to blow up an American Airlines flight en route to the U.S. from France in 2001. Following that incident, no one – neither Democrats nor Republicans – tried to blame that on then-president George W. Bush.

What struck me about this latest incident was the immediate chorus of criticism of President Obama by Republicans … with pit bull Dick Cheney in the vanguard, of course. One more example of the Republican tactic of attack, attack, attack!

I guess that’s what you have to do if you have nothing new or of any value to offer people.

But what disturbs me most is the constant banging on the drum of patriotism by Republicans at the same time they're trying to convince us that Barack Obama is to blame for everything from the economy to global warming to the latest terrorist incident.

That's not patriotic. That's unpatriotic.

What’s worse than an idiot? Someone telling the idiot what to think.

The woeful and, in many cases, willful ignorance being displayed by people opposing health care reform is nothing short of a national disgrace. I returned home today to find a letter-to-the-editor in today's Maui News from a woman ranting against politicians wrestling with this monumentally complex issue. Among other things, she says she wants her 80-year-old mother to live as long as God intends, not until some Washington bureaucrat decides she’s lived long enough.

This stupid woman should be scorned for actually believing that euthanasia canard (if she truly does believe it), but the real condemnation should come down on the heads of the people promoting such outrageous lies. Some are paid lobbyists for the health insurance and health care industries. Others are elected public officials … and, as far as I can tell, every damn one of them is a Republican.

But the worst are the media crazies like Glen Beck … people who are not stupid and who know perfectly well that they are promoting lies to inflame the morons who believe what they say. That, of course, boosts their ratings, and higher ratings increase their already bloated paychecks.

If there is a God, these are the people who already have a seat reserved in the hottest corner of the hottest spot in Hell.
