Being Fair Doesn't Always Mean Equal Treatment.

Please! Do not try to tell me that both sides are equally at fault … that the left is just as offensive and vitriolic as the right … or that you wish “a pox on both their houses”.

In what very large and very lazy segments of the media fob off as “balanced reporting”, they would have us believe that liberals are just as mean-spirited, just as angry and just as violent as the far right. Or that Democrats are just as responsible for the gridlock in Washington as the Republicans. Sorry ... there is plenty of fault on both sides, but the tilt is way over to the right.

Sure there are people who can be described as “left-wing extremists” and they should be condemned whenever they go to their extremes. But, while they may squirt fake blood on mink coats or burn down extravagant homes under construction, with very rare exceptions they don’t threaten to kill people ... or actually kill people.

But extremists on the right? They’re something else altogether. That’s where the racists are. That’s where the gun nuts live. They are the people who label as “slut” someone asking for equal treatment under the law. Or block serious legislation just because they don't want Barack Obama to look good. Or shoot doctors providing legal abortions. Or blow up federal buildings.

So, by all means, let the media report all the bad stuff that happens. Just don’t say that both left and right are equally to blame. Because it just ain’t so.

Proposed Law Would Require Doctors to Lie.

There seems to be no end to the craziness. Republicans in the New Hampshire Legislature have pushed a bill through the House of Representatives that would require doctors to tell patients seeking an abortion that doing so will increase their risk of breast cancer.

One small problem: It ain’t true!

Who says so? The National Institutes of Health, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the World Health Organization, and the American Cancer Society and, I would guess, a lot of others.

What’s wrong with those people? No, more to the point, who elects those people??

Republicans Just Begging to be Ridiculed.

There is apparently no end to the absurdity … to the over-the-top foolishness to which an astonishing number of Republican politicians will go.

In the Virginia legislature, for example, mindless one-issue Republicans proposed a bill that would require any women seeking an abortion to first undergo a “transvaginal” sonogram. As I understand it, this is a procedure similar to the standard ultrasound in which a wand is applied to a pregnant woman’s abdomen to generate images of the fetus. Transvaginal imaging is a similar procedure ... with one obvious and invasive exception.

At any rate, this proposal is so far over the top that it has prompted national attention and is being wickedly mocked by the likes of Jon Stewart, who claimed to have more than a million frequent flyer miles on Transvaginal Airlines.

And, in a brilliant stroke, a female member of the Virginia Legislature has now proposed a law that would require that all men be given a “transrectal” examination of their prostate before pharmacies in the commonwealth would be allowed to fill a prescription for Viagra.

Isn’t it delightful that these Republican politicians are continuing to make such fools of themselves?

And isn’t it distressing that so many voters appear to be agreeing with them?

Trying to Hard Understand

1- The Catholic Church opposes birth control.

2- Half the pregnancies in this country are unintended.

3- The Catholic Church opposes abortion.

4- More birth control would mean fewer abortions.

5- The Catholic Church opposes birth control.

(Hang on … maybe it will start to make sense if we go around again.)

When you call me that, SMILE!

Over the past dozen years or so, Republicans have managed to turn the term “liberal” into a pejorative. So we liberals began calling ourselves “progressives” instead. Undaunted and ever ready to spend their time on such vital matters, the Republicans are now busily turning that word into a negative.

Republicans like John Boehner enjoy referring to the “Democrat Party.” It’s Democratic Party, of course, but I guess they do it just to piss us off. (Boehner is going to a lot of unnecessary trouble; he pisses me off before he even opens his mouth.)

Then there’s the issue of abortion. If you agree with the Republicans, you’re “pro-life.” If you don’t, they say you are “pro-abortion.”

This is a lot more insidious and is a deliberate misrepresentation. No one is pro-abortion! Everyone would like to see fewer and fewer abortions. What we do believe is that the decision should be left to the woman, which makes us "pro-choice".

The latest Republican ploy is to label the health care reforms as “ObamaCare” in the hope that the new reforms will prove to be unpopular and a negative for the president. Of course, if the reforms are successful, they’ll start trumpeting the fact that some 145 components to the new law were Republican ideas … prompting the rest of us to say, “But, in that case, how come you voted against it?” And every last miserable one of them did.
